Dealing with Toxic Co-Workers Without Breaking the Law

You roll your eyes when he/she cracks a joke, you hate hearing him/her talk, and you don’t want to be around him/her. These are a few signs that you have toxic colleagues around you… and they annoy you a lot. Regardless of company size, they will always be there making you wish they never existed.

You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to spot colleagues who will run your patience dry. Aside from the weird feeling they give you, you can easily spot them.

Signs of Toxic Colleagues

… act as if they’re better than everybody else.
… procrastinate.
… dramatize over simple problems.
… gossip.
… resist authority.
… do non-work related tasks (i.e., browsing on social media, shopping online, watching on YouTube).
… show bad attitude towards others.

How to Deal with Them

The happiest person is the one who understands first. Don’t let your annoying co-workers cause you to commit a crime. Here are the things you can do to deal with them without ending up in jail:
1. Don’t get too close.
2. Don’t label them as toxic.
3. Become a part of the solution, not the toxicity.
4. Be different.
5. Look at the positive side of things.
6. Set boundaries.
7. Establish a better relationship.
8. Grow your Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

No matter how infuriating our co-workers can be, they will remain part of our team, and our team is our second family at work. Our imperfections and misdeeds make it all the more pressing that we embody professionalism at all times.
